FREQUENTLY ASKED  QUESTIONS.

WHAT WILL MY FIRST SESSION INVOLVE?

You will be asked to fill in a consultation form and sign a disclaimer in order to consent to treatment. The session will begin with an initial consultation.

WHAT IS A CONSULTATION?

This is a fact finding mission for both parties- this involves finding out why you have come for a treatment and what your expectations are.

A consultation will cover:
Personnel details
Medical
Diet and lifestyle
A postural assessment of your body and specific strength movements, range of movement test may also be carried out
Possible effects discussed and contraindications.

This information is important to ensure that safe and appropriate treatment is carried out and so that you get more benefits from your session.
There may be times when Steady Therapy feels that further investigations are required (i.e GP, Osteopath, chiropractor etc, )and I will act accordingly to make sure to get the best possible treatment plan.
There may be times when you will have to get consent from your GP (if you have any contraindications).

During this 1st session Steady Therapy will discuss assessment findings and agree to a treatment plan with you.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A MASSAGE?

After your treatment to gain further benefits, it is advisable to drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol in the immediate hours after treatment. You may also be emailed some exercises to help continue with your rehabilitation and well being at home.

HOW WILL I FEEL AFTER MY MASSAGE?

The aim is for you to feel less pain, greater mobility, increase range of motion and to promote a sense of well being. You may leave the session, feeling a little sleepy or feeling a bit washed out which is perfectly normal. You may need to take it easy for the rest of the day and refrain from strenuous exercise. You may feel sore and tender for a few days following a deep tissue / sport massage, following treatment until your soft tissues recover and heal again. This is perfectly normal.

IS TREATMENT PAINFUL?

Yes, and no!Yes, it can be if you are having a sports massage as deep pressure is often used to break down any knots - adhesions and tension build up, so in order for treatment to be successful it can be a little painful (but within your pain tolerance). However, steps will be taken to ensure that treatment always remains within your own personal pain threshold. So I will always gain regular feedback from you during your treatment to ensure that you are comfortable. So the answer is if you are clenching your teeth or holding your breath, that’s too much. At Steady Therapy, I definitely do deep work, but I get best results by staying within your pain tolerance rather than pushing past it.

WILL I BRUISE?

If you are having a sports massage often clients skin reddens following treatment and occasionally some bruising may occur later. Please rest assured that this is never a goal but it sometimes does occur.

DO I NEED TO UNDRESS?

For most massage treatments you will need to undress to your under garments, a large towel will be used to ensure your modesty. If you do not wish to remove a certain item of clothing, then there may be limitations on your treatment. I will always protect your modesty and dignity and no pressure will be applied to remove items of clothing if its against your wishes or you feel uncomfortable doing so. If you have long hair, please tie it up for all treatments relating to your back, neck and shoulders.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU CAN DO TO HELP WITH POST WORKOUT SORENESS/DELAYED ONSET MUSCLE SORENESS (DOMS)?

Yes, massage can be pretty effective for reducing delayed onset muscle soreness.

CAN MASSAGE HELP WITH MY ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE?

It can complement your training and aid your recovery. Your training sessions are powerful stimuli for your muscles and nervous system, but too much of one type of stimulus can eventually lead to injury or sensitivity. Think of massage as cross training. It might not help your performance directly, but it can help make you more comfortable in your body as you train.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS SHOULD I HAVE?

This all depends on how quickly your body takes to repair and respond to treatment. Some clients have just one or two sessions. However, more complex issues such as an injury may require a series of treatment sessions. This could take a few weeks or months to get back to optimum levels of function. However, I will be completely honest with you and will not prescribe sessions if I feel it is not necessary. But I do advise that everybody partakes in a regular maintenance treatment every 4-6 weeks to maintain good soft tissue and joint health as well as mental well being.

AM I INSURED?

I hold insurance to cover medical malpractice and public liability. I am a member of the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT) and constantly maintain and improve my professional skills, knowledge and performance.
